Teeth preservation is the main
goal of every dentist. But looking at things these times, people do not do the
rule of thumb of going to the dentist twice a year for a check-up, but instead
only meet their appointments when pain is tolerable, tooth has already decayed
or fell off. In cases of missing teeth, dentists recommend having a dental
implant and not go through the discomfort and inconvenience of dentures.
Soft and hard tissue grafting may
be needed if the site for the implant does not have adequate bone to support
the implant. In some cases, the bone and soft tissue are absent or for
preservation of the existing healthy tissue.
When a tooth is pulled and left
unreplaced for some time, a socket is left open then the bone and soft tissue
shrinks. To prevent this from occurring, a graft is made and placed into the
socket.
In other cases when the site of
the pulled teeth is left to heal naturally, bone resorption occurs. So, a graft
is created to re-grow the ridge. A barrier protects the graft while waiting for
it to heal. This is called guided bone regeneration and only applicable for
small defects.
The onlay bone graft is done for
large defects in the bone. A piece of bone is harvested from other location in your
mouth or in some instances, a cadaver. The bone is screwed into the defective
site and restores the health of the site for dental implant.
